Heathrow Airport has set a new benchmark, with an unprecedented 81.5 million passengers passing through its terminals over the past 12 months. This record-breaking milestone underscores Heathrow’s status as the UK’s premier hub airport.

In May alone, the airport handled 7.2 million passengers, marking the first time May traffic has exceeded 7 million. Projections for the summer indicate even higher numbers, with an estimated 30 million travellers expected.

Heathrow’s staff have efficiently managed increasing passenger volumes, ensuring smooth and confident travel experiences. Enhancing the airport’s appeal, Terminal 2—The Queen’s Terminal—now boasts the UK’s first branch of Jones the Grocer, offering freshly-made meals and artisanal produce.

This summer also marks the 10th anniversary of Terminal 2’s operations. Since its inauguration in 2014, the terminal has facilitated travel for 148 million passengers to over 30 countries, with more than a million flights.

Recent research celebrating the terminal’s anniversary reveals that many travellers indulge in pre-flight treats, such as cake for breakfast, impulse gifts, or morning drinks. In May, passengers purchased 40,000 Toblerones—approximately one every minute—enough to span the length of the airport’s northern runway.

While summer travel is ramping up, winter escape plans are also in the spotlight. British Airways has announced a new route from Heathrow to Tromsø, Norway, ideal for those seeking the Northern Lights and Arctic adventures. Additionally, SAS will soon offer flights to Sälen, Sweden, catering to winter sports enthusiasts.
