Uxbridge College launches ultimate National Innovation Challenge for 2027
Uxbridge College just launched the ultimate National Innovation Challenge for 2027

The National Innovation Challenge (NIC) opened at Uxbridge College yesterday (23 September), unveiling a nationwide contest that offers a once‑in‑a‑lifetime prize: a study‑trip to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in autumn 2027.

The competition, now in its third year, invites students from schools, colleges and sixth‑forms across the country to propose bold, practical solutions for “Tomorrow’s World”.

A trio of Uxbridge students – Shlok, Xainaldo and Faithon – secured the Colleges category for NIC 2026 with “Road‑IQ”, a smart road hump that converts the mechanical force of passing vehicles into usable electricity.

Speaking at the launch, Yaseen Akhtar, Managing Director of the West London Institute of Technology, and Dr Niamh Shaw, NIC ambassador and chair of the independent judging panel, highlighted the programme’s aim to empower young innovators. The winning team will join other 2026 finalists who previously networked with representatives from MIT, Amazon, BT and industry leaders at a central‑London final earlier this year.

Led by Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) in partnership with the MIT Industrial Liaison Programme, the NIC seeks to tackle pressing global issues. Past entries have featured a synthetic tree for carbon‑dioxide removal, a real‑time recycling worktop device, and the award‑winning smart road hump.

Yaseen said: “The Challenge has provided students with the opportunity to see how much potential they have. By challenging them to think differently, develop their ideas and believe in what they can achieve, we’ve seen young people grow in confidence and realise that their ambitions can take them much further than they may have imagined.”

The 2027 winners will be announced at a high‑profile awards ceremony next summer.
