New Library Opens in Civic Centre

Uxbridge library opening Hillingdon Mayor Council-leaders | Hillingdon Today
The Mayor of Hillingdon, Leader of the Council, Cllr Ian Edwards and Cllr Eddie Lavery officially open the new Uxbridge Library / Hillingdon Council

A new chapter has begun for Uxbridge Library as Hillingdon Council officially opened its modernised facility within the Civic Centre last Thursday.

The refurbished library, now located in the former Middlesex Suite of the Grade II listed building, was unveiled by the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Colleen Sullivan, and Council Leader Cllr Ian Edwards, who marked the occasion with a plaque unveiling. They were joined by Cllr Eddie Lavery, Cabinet Member for Community and Environment.

The transformation forms part of the council’s strategy to co-locate services, improving public access and delivering greater value for money. Situated just 30 metres from the Uxbridge Family Hub and Adult Education Centre, the new library is also next to the site of a forthcoming local history museum, due to open later this year.

Local schoolchildren from St Andrew’s C of E Primary and Whitehall Junior School were given special tours during the launch event. Visitors enjoyed storytelling sessions, and a knitting and crochet workshop led by volunteer group Knit and Natters.

The library blends heritage with sustainability, combining original Art Deco features with modern, industrial design. The building boasts restored parquet flooring using reclaimed 16th-century wood, ample natural light, and energy-efficient heating powered by an air source heat pump.

Speaking at the opening, Cllr Edwards said: “This is a truly stunning new facility that celebrates learning, creativity and connection, while meeting our requirements for sustainability and accessibility.

“I hope this bright, spacious and modern library will become a vibrant hub for the local community and by co-locating it with other essential services, we’ve made it simple for residents to also access family support and education opportunities all in one place.”
