A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of 16-year-old Kamari Johnson in Hayes.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted at the Old Bailey of murder and possession of a bladed article. He was sentenced on Tuesday, 21 January.
Kamari was stabbed on Bourne Avenue in Hayes, on Friday, 24 May 2024. He attempted to flee on a moped but crashed shortly after being attacked. The fatal chase, which was captured on video, showed the assailant pursuing Kamari on foot.
The killer handed himself in at Hayes Police Station the following day and claimed he acted in self-defence. However, CCTV footage and witness accounts, along with phone records, revealed the pair had argued over the £180 sale of a moped.
Detectives described the attack as a senseless act of violence stemming from a petty dispute.
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila, who led the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with Kamari’s loved ones. Though nothing can bring him back, this sentence removes a cold-blooded killer from the streets.
“The murder was committed in broad daylight, and members of the public tried in vain to save Kamari’s life as he lay dying.
“Shockingly, the motive appears to have been a dispute over a £180 moped. This case illustrates how petty disagreements can spiral into murderous violence when knives are carried.”
