Hillingdon Council has crushed the first vehicle identified as being used for fly‑tipping in the borough, underscoring its new “tough on fly‑tipping” policy.
The Ford Iveco flatbed truck, seized after being caught dumping waste on a residential road in Ickenham, was destroyed on 3 September.
The council’s anti‑social behaviour team located the vehicle through its extensive CCTV network and intercepted it in Hayes, where it was impounded before being taken to a crushing facility. Council officials said the action demonstrates the range of powers available to protect Hillingdon’s environment, including stopping, searching, seizing and, where necessary, crushing offending vehicles.
Fly‑tipping remains a criminal offence that damages the environment and blights neighbourhoods. The council warned that perpetrators now face an immediate fine of up to £1,000 and the possibility of prosecution.
Cllr Adam Bennett, Cabinet Member for Community, Environment and Enforcement, said: “Crushing our first vehicle sends a clear message that fly-tipping will not be tolerated. Where we have the evidence, we will use every enforcement power available to hold those responsible to account.
“Fly-tipping damages our environment and communities, and there is no excuse for dumping waste illegally when a range of free or low-cost disposal options are available.
“We all have a role to play in keeping Hillingdon clean, so I would urge residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and report any incidents of fly-tipping to us.”
