New data has highlighted Hillingdon as one of the safest London boroughs for motorists for the third year running.
Consumer research company NimbleFins collected accident and traffic figures from the Department for Transport to determine accident rates per mile of driving.
Hillingdon had the lowest accident rate, ranking it as the number one safest in London. In 2018 there were 54.3 accidents per 100 million miles of driving in the borough compared to the London average of 139.6. This makes the odds of having an accident in Hillingdon six times lower than in the most dangerous borough (Camden).
Hillingdon was also ranked second safest in London (behind only Havering) in terms of the number of deaths and serious injuries per 100 million miles driven (9.5).
Cllr Keith Burrows, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Transportation, told HAREFIELD RADIO:
“Reckless or dangerous driving has no place on our roads so I am pleased that Hillingdon has once again been deemed the safest in London. However, we must not be complacent and will continue to work with our road safety partners to ensure that the safety of road users, cyclists and pedestrians continues to be a priority.”
Roads are kept in the best condition through the council’s extensive yearly road resurfacing programme and the unique ‘road safety suggestion programme,’ which encourages residents to raise any concerns about road safety.
Next month the council will launch its annual Safe Drive Stay Alive road safety campaign, which features a series of events aimed at raising awareness of the importance of safe driving. Members of the public are welcome to come along to a one-off evening performance on Thursday 28 November at 6:30pm at The Winston Churchill Hall, Ruislip.
