Hillingdon Council is set to relaunch its automatic recycling bag delivery service with a renewed focus on efficiency and environmental sustainability. Scheduled to start on Tuesday, April 2nd, this initiative aims to streamline the process of obtaining recycling bags while minimizing environmental impact.

Under the revamped scheme, residents are required to re-register or sign up for the service. Those already enrolled are encouraged to re-register to continue receiving their free dry mixed recycling bags and food waste bags, also known as caddy liners.

Registration is a straightforward process, involving providing details such as the number of occupants in the household and the average weekly consumption of recycling bags. This information allows for a tailored subscription that meets each household’s specific needs.

In a departure from the previous model, residents will now receive their entire year’s supply of bags in one delivery, rather than every four months. The first batch of deliveries following the relaunch is slated to commence in June. To ensure a timely delivery, residents are advised to re-register or sign up at least a month before their scheduled delivery month. The status of deliveries can be checked on the council’s website.

The subscription service aims to simplify the process of obtaining recycling bags, eliminating the need for residents to remember to reorder or visit local libraries for replacements. Once subscribed, residents will receive an annual email prompting them to review and adjust their subscription if necessary. Additionally, residents can request ad-hoc deliveries online or collect replacement rolls from local libraries if they unexpectedly run out of bags during the year.

To participate in the scheme, residents simply need to visit the council’s website and follow the instructions provided at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/automatic-bag-deliveries.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services said: “We introduced this free delivery service for residents more than a decade ago, but we now need to adapt it to fit today’s world and keep our commitment of creating a greener future.

“As part of our ongoing transformation programme to deliver value for money for residents and climate change work to reduce carbon emissions, we reviewed how the scheme works and made changes to make it more efficient.

“By supplying the right number of bags for each household, we will be able to reduce over-supply and waste and by delivering once a year we remove more than 150,000 vehicle journeys from the roads, which all contributes to our ambition for the council’s operations to be carbon neutral by 2030.”
