Gardening enthusiasts in Hillingdon are gearing up for an exciting season of green-thumb glory as Hillingdon Council announces the launch of its much-anticipated plant-growing competitions for 2024. The Mayor of Hillingdon, alongside past winners and entrants, kicked off the festivities at the Great Barn in Ruislip last Friday (April 19).

The councils renowned competitions, Hillingdon in Bloom and the Autumn Show, are now open for entries, inviting both seasoned gardeners and newcomers alike to showcase their talents. With an aim to diversify participation, the council is actively encouraging first-time competitors to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to these beloved events, which have long been cherished by horticulture enthusiasts across the borough.

One of the key appeals of these competitions is their inclusivity. Participants need not be seasoned experts or possess vast expanses of garden space, rather, a passion for keeping the borough green and vibrant or a knack for cultivating homegrown produce is all that’s needed to join in the fun.

Hillingdon in Bloom, the council’s annual gardening extravaganza, offers residents the chance to hone their gardening skills and create eye-catching, eco-friendly displays at their homes. Meanwhile, the Autumn Show provides a platform for showcasing fresh produce taking centre stage at a celebratory event in September.

Both competitions offer lots of categories, ensuring there’s something for everyone to explore. From “best hanging basket” to “best balcony” for Hillingdon in Bloom, to a showcase of homegrown vegetables, fruit, jams, chutneys, floristry displays, and arts and crafts at the Autumn Show, there’s no shortage of opportunities to flex one’s green fingers.

Participation is not only free but also comes with enticing rewards for winners, including garden centre gift vouchers, rosettes, and certificates. The final showdown will take place at the Great Barn on Saturday, September 14th, welcoming attendees from all walks of life to join in the celebration of community spirit and horticultural excellence.

Last year, Maxine Coleman, from Cowley, took home first prize in the ‘Best Novelty Garden’ category for her pink-themed garden. Maxine only took up gardening during lockdown and found it therapeutic and thinks a great for boost for mental health. She said:

“I’ve just got the bug now. I’ve entered every year since and I just really enjoy the experience. “People should enter, there’s absolutely nothing to lose, it doesn’t cost anything to enter and you may win a prize.”
