Hillingdon Council has begun distributing Babyboxes to eligible local families, providing essential items to support newborns and ease the transition into parenthood.
The scheme was unveiled yesterday (27 August) at the West Drayton Family Hub, where Cllr Susan O’Brien, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults, Children, Health and Care, presented the first boxes.
Each Babybox contains 22 items, including short‑ and long‑sleeved bodysuits, socks, a hat, a blanket, a comforter toy, a play mat, a baby book, a travel changing mat, a toothbrush, a thermometer and disposable nappies.
The initiative targets families who may require extra assistance during the early stages of parenthood, such as younger parents, care‑experienced parents, households with limited financial resources, and those already receiving support from family‑help or social‑care services.
Funding for the Babyboxes comes from a Department for Education grant. Referrals can be made through Hillingdon Council, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, Hillingdon Hospital or Home‑Start Hillingdon.
Cllr O’Brien said: “Having a baby is such an exciting and special time, but we know those first few weeks can also be a big adjustment for parents, both emotionally and financially.
“We want our families to feel supported as they start this new chapter, and our Babyboxes are a simple, practical way of helping with some of those everyday needs.
“Alongside this scheme, our family hubs offer a range of support and guidance for local families, helping ensure children get the best possible start in life and parents know where to turn when they need advice or assistance.”
