Council initiates review into initiative designed to alleviate pressure on GPs by encouraging residents to visit pharmacies for minor ailments.

Hillingdon Council's Children, Families, Health and Care Select Committee has initiated a comprehensive review into the 'Pharmacy First' initiative, a scheme designed to alleviate pressure on GPs by encouraging residents to visit pharmacies for minor ailments.

The committee, who met yesterday (23rd June) has identified this initiative as a key area for scrutiny to ensure it delivers value for money. The review, which was given unanimous support and will span three to four meetings, aims to investigate the effectiveness of the scheme in the context of local healthcare accessibility in the borough.

The initiative was identified as a critical area for scrutiny to ensure it is delivering value for money.

Councillor John Gardner argued that the scheme is "such a big piece of work" that it requires in-depth analysis to confirm it is being "utilised" effectively. Supporting this view, Councillor Drew noted that pharmacies are now taking on significant responsibilities formerly held by doctors and clinics, including blood pressure checks and flu vaccinations.

The outcome of this reviews will be crucial in defining how Hillingdon Council holds the NHS and health partners to account over the coming months. These investigations represent a vital check and balance for Hillingdon residents, ensuring that local healthcare services meet the community's needs.
