Women in Hillingdon who have had gestational diabetes can access free NHS health programme to reduce risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Women in Hillingdon who have experienced gestational diabetes can now access a free health programme designed to help prevent Type 2 Diabetes. With around 50% of women who develop diabetes during pregnancy later developing Type 2 Diabetes, early intervention is key.

The Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme offers a free, nine-month support plan tailored to women’s lifestyles. Unlike the usual process, which requires a blood test for eligibility, women with a history of gestational diabetes can enrol without one. This streamlined access allows them to join a supportive online community and take proactive steps towards better health.

The programme provides expert guidance on nutrition, exercise, and overall wellbeing, available online or in person. Participants can connect with others, receive practical health advice, and access an online gym and ‘Healthier You’ journal for progress tracking.

According to Diabetes UK, gestational diabetes affects 1 in 20 pregnancies in the UK. While it often resolves after childbirth, half of those affected will later develop Type 2 Diabetes. Early intervention through lifestyle changes can significantly reduce this risk.

Jimmy Rushworth, Associate Director of Diabetes Prevention at Healthier You, said: “It’s never too late because, whether you had gestational diabetes last year or 20 years ago, you are still at risk and this programme is relevant whether your child is a newborn or fully grown.

“By focusing on practical solutions the programme helps women take action now to make a difference to their health.

“Each session focuses on holistic health improvements, covering nutrition, exercise, sleep, through a 10-month behaviour change programme.”
