West Drayton and Yiewsley residents are one step closer to enjoying a state-of-the-art leisure centre as the final steel beam to complete the new Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre was installed on site this week.
To mark this significant milestone in the construction process, the Leader of Hillingdon Council, Cllr Ian Edwards, alongside Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Property, Highways and Transport, Cllr Jonathan Bianco, and Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, Cllr Eddie Lavery, gathered for a traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony.
This ceremony is a rite of passage for builders that marks the installation of the final beam in a new structure. However, for residents, it means their long-awaited and eagerly anticipated leisure facility is one step closer to completion.
The new Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre will be a vital amenity for the Yiewsley and West Drayton communities, and the council’s commitment to ensuring thriving and healthy households.
The project is being undertaken by developers Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd, who began construction work on the site in spring 2022.
Once completed, the centre will offer a wide range of first-class leisure facilities, including a 25-metre swimming pool, training pool, splash-zone, gym and health suite, soft play, youth and community hub, a café and terrace, and even a rooftop 3G turf football pitch.
Residents were consulted on the plans for the new centre back in September 2019, and their feedback was taken into account wherever possible in the design process.
The new Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre is expected to be fully completed in the summer of 2024, providing the community with a modern, vibrant, and much-needed facility for many years to come.
Cllr Bianco said: “I was delighted to visit the leisure centre and see the very impressive build taking shape and now really look forward to seeing it when it’s fully finished and bustling with people.
“This building is a statement of our commitment to ensuring residents have access to first class health and leisure services that enable to them to live active, fulfilling lifestyles and I have no doubt the community will really enjoy this fantastic leisure centre once open.”
