Police officers have responded to community concerns over a recent spate of jewellery thefts by carrying out targeted operations that resulted in eight arrests and six charges. Since the interventions, no further reports of this type of crime have been recorded in the area.
Officers are warning residents to remain vigilant for the so‑called “blessing scam” or “blessing robbery”. Offenders approach victims in a friendly manner, offer a gift and place a cheap item – such as a piece of jewellery, a scarf or an amulet – around the victim’s neck while engaging them in conversation. The distraction allows the thief to stealthily remove and steal the victim’s genuine, high‑value jewellery before departing.
Residents are advised to be cautious if strangers offer gifts or attempt to place items around their necks. If something feels wrong, they should move away and report the behaviour to police.
In the event of a crime in progress, callers should dial 999. Information can also be submitted by calling 101.
